Chelsea keen to re-sign former Cobham star next summer

Transfer News: Chelsea considering the option of re-signing Tammy Abraham

According to the print edition of Il Messaggero via Hard Tackle (h/t Football London), Chelsea are contemplating on resigning Tammy Abraham from Roma on the back of his excellent season in the Italian capital.

Abraham joined Roma from Chelsea for a reported fee of £34m and has been sensational for Jose Mourinho’s team this season. The former Chelsea striker has scored 23 goals and provided four assists in 40 matches this season and is considered one of the hottest prospects in Italy.

Always rated highly at the Cobham, Abraham fell out of contention under Thomas Tuchel and was forced to move abroad in search of pastures new. Former boss Mourinho provided him with just that opportunity, taking the talented Englishman under his wing and making him a prolific goal scorer.

The Blues are said to be interested in now re-signing the forward just a year after parting ways with him. However, they could be in for a tricky period with Roma said to be not so keen on selling Abraham.

According to an Italian daily Tuttosport via Mirror, Roma have absolutely no intention of cashing in on a player as Jose Mourinho wants to build a team around his star man. Chelsea are said to have a buy-back clause for the Chelsea striker but it does not get activated until 2023.

A mistake by Chelsea?

Chelsea may be keen on resigning the talented striker but selling him was a mistake in the first place. The 24-year-old performed admirably well under Frank Lampard in the first half of last season but fell out of favour after the managerial change midway.

Although Thomas Tuchel’s men have performed well this season, their striking issues are well documented with both Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku struggling to establish themselves in the team.

Although Kai Havertz and sometimes Christian Pulisic have performed admirably in the striker role this season, the absence of a true striker has been felt sometimes this season. If Abraham had stayed, he could have been the solution to Chelsea’s striking woes.

There is no doubt that the talented Englishman will be back in his homeland before long. The 24-year-old is likely to develop his game in Italy under Mourinho before he returns to the Premier League.

His return could be to Chelsea or elsewhere with many clubs said to be keen on signing the prolific striker. Abraham’s ceiling is very high and is destined to make it to the top of the game. Whether it happens at Chelsea or elsewhere remains to be seen.
