According to The Mirror, Chelsea will face off against Borussia Dortmund to sign Arminia Bielefeld centre-back Amos Pieper in the summer transfer window. He is in line to leave his current club at the end of this season, which has prompted the English club to enter the race.
Pieper has less than six months left in his current deal with Bielefeld, and he could look for a fresh challenge after this campaign. The Blues are looking to bolster their defensive ranks since they are at risk of losing their key players this summer. They have identified the Arminia star as a good opportunity and are tracking him right now.
The West London side would need to deal with Dortmund, who are eagerly looking to re-sign their former player. The German had played for the latter in the past, but it remains to be seen whether that could play a part in this transfer race. A move to the Premier League is touted to be on the cards, which could give Chelsea a boost in their pursuit.
The 24-year-old rose through the youth ranks with BVB’s youth system before moving to Arminia in 2019. Since then, he has cemented his place as a starter at his current club, becoming one of their crucial performers in the process. Now it seems that he could potentially move elsewhere to take another leap in his career.
The Bundesliga ace has featured in 26 league games this term, earning six clean sheets during that period. Despite his side struggling in the relegation zone, he has stood out as one of the shining lights of this campaign. A natural rock at the back, Pieper has shown great prowess, especially on the defensive side of his game.
The Bielefeld defender’s ability to ping a long ball and break lines is not too shabby, but it is his defensive attributes that make him stand out from the rest. As an imposing presence at the back, Pieper has shown a great knack for stopping opposition attacks with his renowned tackling and interception abilities.
What’s more, the German central defender also leads his line and is not afraid to throw his body on the line when needed. He is a threat from set-pieces or corners, making him an attractive prospect to potentially replace Antonio Rudiger after this term.
However, facilitating a move would not be easy because of Marco Rose’s side. But they are not the only ones that we need to be wary of, with Southampton and Newcastle United also keeping tabs on the situation. Since Pieper is available for free this summer, it does make way for an interesting couple of months moving forward.
Replacing exit bound Rudiger would be a difficult task indeed, but signing Pieper could help us fill that gap without much expenditure. Andreas Christensen, who will also leave for free like the former, gives us more reasons to pursue the Bielefeld star because of the low financial investment.
