Transfer News: Barcelona could consider a free transfer move for N’golo Kante
According to Fichajes (h/t Football London), Barcelona could make a move for N’golo Kante next summer after his contract with Chelsea expires.
The French midfielder has been one of Chelsea’s best players for many years now since his move from Leicester City. Kante has put in so many memorable performances in a Blues shirt over the years but his contract is set to expire in 2023.
Kante has played 33 times for Thomas Tuchel’s team this season and has been one of the team’s most consistent performers. Whilst his performances in recent weeks have come under some criticism, there is no denying the 31-year-old’s importance to the team.
Ideally, Chelsea will want to keep Kante at the club beyond his current deal. The report however claims that Barcelona are looking to make a move for the midfielder in the 2023 summer transfer window.
The defensive midfielder could be on the Spanish club’s radar next summer when his contract expires in 2023. The French midfielder can then make a free switch to the Camp Nou. Whether Chelsea will permit him to run down his contract is debatable.
Renew as soon as they can?
Chelsea find themselves in an extraordinary situation right now, with the club operating on a special licence following the sanctions placed on them. The Blues are unable to open contract negotiations with any of their players and teams around the world will be looking to take advantage.
If he fails to pen a new deal with the Blues, the 31-year-old could be available for a cut-price this summer as Chelsea may not want to lose such a talented player for free. Whether Barcelona will bite or choose to wait for another season to land him for free remains to be seen.
Whilst Barcelona’s interest is said to be only to sign the player on a free, a lot of other European giants will be keeping an eye on Kante’s situation at Chelsea.
Jorginho’s contract is also expiring next summer and the Italian is constantly being linked with a move back to Italy. If both players fail to renew contracts, then the Blues will be stuck without two of their first choice midfielders. The Blues will then have to dip into the market to sign quality replacements.

As such, Chelsea will want to renew Kante’s contract as soon as possible to avoid losing him for free and keep him in for many years. However, for that, the ownership issues will have to be resolved as soon as possible.
Renewing Kante’s contract must be a priority for the new owners, and we hope they’ll make sure the Frenchman stays at Stamford Bridge for 2023 and beyond.
