Chelsea boss Tuchel praises ‘important’ Timo Werner for his brace against Southampton
Speaking after Chelsea’s match against Southampton as quoted by Football London, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel reiterated Timo Werner importance to the club after the faltering striker’s brace against the Saints.
Chelsea completed a 6-0 rout of Southampton in the Premier League today with braces from Mason Mount and Timo Werner along with a goal each from Marcos Alonso and Kai Havertz seeing the Blues through and helping them strengthen their hold on a top-4 spot.
The victory was much needed for Tuchel’s men after back to back losses against Brentford and Real Madrid. The win over the Saints will serve as a moral boost for the Blues whose confidence would have taken a hit following the untimely defeats.
One player whose performance would have made Tuchel very happy would have been Timo Werner who took his chance in style by scoring a brace. The German striker has struggled during his time at Stamford Bridge and this performance must give him a lot of confidence.
Speaking about his counterpart’s performance, Tuchel said that Werner benefited a lot from the system that the Blues played and reiterated his importance to the team.
“It was his position, the players around him, connection with Mason, Kai and Kova. It was the half left position as the double striker and it was an opponent that we could find spaces. It was set out for him to deliver and not give up. He is still an important player of this club and this group, and he did deliver.”
Start of something special?
Having joined Chelsea back in 2020 for a fee of €53m, it’s quite evident that things have not worked out for the 26-year old German striker.
Huge things were expected of Werner who came to Stamford Bridge on the back of a 34-goal season in Germany but ever since his move to London, his goal output has diminished.
It may be too soon to get excited about the German’s performance against the Saints, as this could be yet another false dawn in the Chelsea career of Timo Werner.
This performance must give Werner the confidence that he desperately needed. The Blues travel to Madrid next week as they look to wipe a 3-1 deficit and it remains to be seen if the German starts the match based on today’s performance.
If the German manages to inspire Chelsea to the unthinkable by getting the better of Los Blancos, then the opinion about Werner would change in one night.
