Mason Mount has showered the in-form Timo Werner with praise following the 2-0 win against Crystal Palace. The striker has enjoyed quite a positive run of form over the past few games, which has seen him earn plaudits for his fine performances.
Werner was impressive in the 6-0 riot of Southampton in the Premier League and the 3-2 second-leg victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League. He scored three goals and provided an assist in both those games combined and has now followed that up with another assist against Palace in the FA Cup semi-finals. He set up Mount for the second goal of the night just a few minutes after Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s opener in the 65th minute.
Speaking in the post-match interview (h/t Chelsea official website), Mount lauded the German attacker for the energy he has been showing in the past three fixtures. The midfielder added that Werner could have also added to his goals and assists during this time.
“He’s been brilliant since he came in at Southampton and then in Madrid. You can see he’s full of energy. He gives everything so I’m very pleased for him. He got me a little assist, could have had another one and he could have had a couple of goals as well. He’s done so well the past couple of games.”
It is good to see that the 26-year-old forward has enjoyed such success in the past few weeks or so. That has rarely ever been the case at Stamford Bridge since his £45million move from RB Leipzig back in 2020. However, it seems that he is finally turning a new page, having now become a key part of our attack in the last three matches.
Fans would be happy to see the Premier League ace being named the Man of the Match against Patrick Vieira’s side. That would undoubtedly give him a massive confidence boost for the remainder of this season where we fight for a top-four finish and the FA Cup title.
The Blues centre-forward must maintain this form throughout the rest of this term, as it would be reactionary to say that he has truly turned things around just yet. Doubts were creeping in about his future, considering how he failed to show promise since leaving Leipzig.
Romelu Lukaku’s struggles have given Werner a perfect opportunity to make his case to Thomas Tuchel. He has done just that in the past three fixtures, with Lukaku still enduring difficulties to recapture the form that he showed at Inter Milan.
Let’s hope that Werner improves on this trajectory so that he would finally meet the expectations fans had from him when he was signed in the first place. Whether that will happen or not remains to be seen in due time.
Our fixture list does not get easy, with two London derbies against Arsenal and West Ham United on 20th and 24th April respectively- with a game against Manchester United later this month. With two games in hand over most of our competitors, we are favourites to finish third.
But for players like Werner and Lukaku, this provides them with a run of games to prove themselves and make a case to be the club’s leading striker next season. That is especially the case with the Blues being linked to Erling Haaland this season.
