According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United have held talks with Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger regarding a potential move in the summer transfer window. His future at Stamford Bridge has been surrounded by uncertainty for quite some time, which would be made much worse by this update.
Rudiger has less than six months left in his current contract with the Blues, causing the uncertainty. He has not agreed to an extension just yet despite being a crucial component of Thomas Tuchel’s backline. Man United are looking to bolster their options in the centre-back position, which has prompted them to hold talks with the defender.
That being said, the current negotiations are only “exploratory” in nature, and no concrete ground has been covered so far. The Red Devils have little expectations of finalising a transfer, with the German international keen to move to clubs that can offer him Champions League football.
The interest from the Manchester club is not something that we need to be concerned about going by this update. After all, even they are not confident about facilitating a move for the 29-year-old at the end of this season. That does give us a sigh of relief as losing our star man to our direct rivals would have been the last thing that we needed.
However, this news also gives us a warning about all the potential Champions League clubs that the Blues ace could join in the future. We cannot afford to lose him at all, especially when Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta could leave us after the current campaign.
Losing Rudiger would also be detrimental as it could create a crisis in the defensive setup. After all, we cannot depend upon Thiago Silva to lead us forward when he is nearing the end of his playing career. Trevoh Chalobah has enjoyed a breakthrough season, but it would be too risky to depend on him regularly.
Malang Sarr still needs time to adapt as he has had a mixed time this term so far. Hence, Rudiger would be of great help to support our defence in this time of transition with his tendency to lead from the back. For that to happen, though, the West London side must agree to terms with the centre-back over a new deal.
However, the current ownership uncertainty does not help us in this case, as we cannot engage in talks with Rudiger over a renewal. Let’s wait and see how this situation will turn out in the coming months ahead of the next season.
