Transfer Speculation: Inter Milan legend urges club to sign Romelu Lukaku this summer amid Chelsea struggles

Inter Milan legend Giuseppe Bergomi has suggested that Romelu Lukaku could return to Giuseppe Meazza this summer amidst his struggles at Chelsea. There have been rumours linking the striker to rejoin his former club at the end of the current campaign.

The Blues facilitated a club-record £97.5million transfer for Lukaku in the previous summer. However, his time at Stamford Bridge has not been rosy, having struggled to replicate the form he showcased in Serie A with Inter. As such, the centre-forward is being linked with a return on a loan move after this season. Bergomi, a one-club man who played for twenty years with the Serie A side, has chipped in with his thoughts on the matter.

Speaking in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, as quoted by Football Italia (h/t The Sun), Bergomi has advised the Nerazzurri to bring back the Belgian attacker under the right conditions. He added more fuel to the fire by revealing how Simone Inzaghi admires the forward despite working with him only for a few days.

The Italian defender has strong linkages to Nerazzurri, given he spent more than decades at the club as a player. A FIFA World Cup winner with Gli Azzurri in 1982, he is considered one of the greatest defenders to ever grace the beautiful game.

“Lukaku was the best one in Italy, I think Inter would be another team with him. With all respect for Edin Dzeko, Lukaku had a different impact in terms of power, pace and leadership. He had Inter in his hands. If there were the conditions, I would bring him back. Inzaghi confessed to me he’s never coached such a strong striker despite working with him for just 10 days.”

Summer move?

It is highly advisable that talks of a return to Italy should be taken with a pinch of salt unless we receive reliable confirmations from the involved parties. The same can be said for the Premier League star supposedly saying goodbyes to his teammates at Cobham.

It would be reactionary for Thomas Tuchel’s side or even the 28-year-old to call it a day even though both parties have not enjoyed a full season with each other. Kai Havertz’s rise has made life difficult for the Belgian international even further, but the latter could still turn things around moving forward.

Havertz himself had a difficult time in his first season with us, but he has enjoyed a turn in tide from the second season onwards. The crucial goal in the Champions League final did help him, so Lukaku could take a page from the former’s book to help us achieve glory and stamp his authority in the squad.

Inzaghi may still hold admiration for Lukaku, but that is hardly a surprise. The ex-Manchester United star took Italy by storm under Antonio Conte and if he was replacing the same form in training, the former Lazio manager would have surely wanted him to remain for the upcoming season.

But things are rarely ever that simple in football. He is our player now and has a point to prove in England, especially after his recent run of poor games in the league and the UCL.

We remain hopeful that the huge investment we made last summer will not go to waste in the end. It is highly advisable that the squad does not weaken itself going into the next season and fans would want that the focus, when it comes to transfers, remains on our defence- with three players out of contract this summer.
