Hull City looking to sign an agreement for Chelsea goalkeeper Nathan Baxter for 2022-23 season
According to Football League World (h/t Yorkshire Evening Post), Hull City are looking to strike an agreement with Chelsea goalkeeper Nathan Baxter to retain his services for the 2022-23 season.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper has made 14 appearances, bagging six clean sheets and conceding 15 goals for the Tigers across all competitions this season to date. The youngster has shown immense potential and a loan move could help him refine his game as well as get some crucial first-team minutes under his belt.
The Yorkshire-based club’s head coach Shota Arveladze has also displayed his eagerness to keep the young shot-stopper at their club next season. Putting all of these factors into consideration it would be interesting to see what the future holds for Baxter.
The young goalie
The English goalkeeper, at 23, still has some of his prime playing years ahead of him. Should things fall in line, Baxter could represent us in between the sticks for years to come. While that may be true, it is very difficult for him to displace our current choices in Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Senegalese keeper has been a resolute presence at the back since arriving at Stamford Bridge. He has largely pulled up some excellent performances in the last couple of years. The Spaniard has also been a dependable backup option in Mendy’s absence.
The ex-Athletic Bilbao man was particularly impressive for us during the spell where Mendy was away with Senegal for the AFCON tournament that they eventually won. He seems to have improved under Tuchel considering Frank Lampard was the manager who brought in the African stopper from Stade Rennais to become our number 1.
Looking at our high-profile options, it would therefore seem like the right option to send him out on loan again. Baxter is already familiar with the setup at Hull and their boss has shown his trust in the 23-year-old. This could be the perfect launchpad for him to refine his skill set at a place where is bound to get playing minutes on a regular basis.
That is highly unlikely at Chelsea. That being said, we should also be aware of any protruding interest that may crop up for him if we genuinely view him as a long-term asset. We have used the loan system to great effect in the past to help build the stage for some of our deserving youngsters, such as Trevoh Chalobah and Mason Mount.

Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja are two products of the Blues setup that are currently shining and playing important roles for their loan clubs at the moment. We hope that Nathan Baxter can draw some inspiration and develop on the same trajectory should he continue plying his trade at Hull City for the 2022-23 season.
