According to Christian Falk of BILD on Twitter, Chelsea have been given a boost as Antonio Rudiger still prefers to stay with them amidst interest from Real Madrid for a transfer this summer. His future at Stamford Bridge has been up in the air for quite a while, but this latest update would be welcomed by the English club.
Rudiger is in the final year of his current contract with the Blues, and he is free to walk away after this season. That has seen several top European clubs add him to their radars for a potential move this summer. They are legally able to engage in talks with him to reach an agreement ahead of a possible transfer.
However, the German centre-back maintains his preference of staying with Thomas Tuchel’s side past this season. That is despite clubs like Real, Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain vying to get their hands on him this summer. That being said, a final decision will only be made after the Champions League quarter-final against the Madrid club.
The West London side apparently still has a shot at renewing the 29-year-old’s deal despite competition from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. For that to happen, though, we must reach an agreement over the terms of a new contract with the centre-back ahead of the next season.
However, Tuchel’s team would need to find a solution to this ownership uncertainty, considering how they are not allowed to engage in contract talks due to the sanctions. The interested parties are hoping that the Premier League star would become frustrated by this situation and would not wait for the new prospective owners.
But we remain hopeful that the former AS Roma man would do just that since his preference is to still stay with us. He has everything that he needs at this moment at the Bridge, which may not be the case if he moves elsewhere. The fans love him, the coach rates him highly and staying with us also ensures stability, unlike a transfer to another club.
Supposedly, the German international wants to increase his wages to £220,000-a-week, which is the reason why an agreement was not reached before the sanctions had hit us. That seems to be a very reasonable demand when looking at his importance to the team’s success.
Timo Werner, for example, earns around £270,000-a-week in wages, and we all know how much he has struggled throughout his time with us. While the exact figures these stars earn can be hard to pin down, it is fair to say Rudiger deserves a bump in his contract after a solid year under Tuchel.
Having let Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori leave last summer under Frank Lampard’s tenure and with Thiago Silva not getting any younger, there is a need for new faces at the back- rather than losing one of our star defenders.
