Tammy Abraham reveals the conversations he has had with Reece James amidst Manchester United links.

Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has revealed that he followed the path of academy graduates to leave the club

Speaking to The Athletic, Former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham revealed that he took inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku to leave the club in the summer transfer window.

Despite getting his breakthrough season at Chelsea, Tammy Abraham surprised everyone by leaving the club in the summer of 2021. Since then, he has become a sensation in Serie A, scoring 24 goals and assisting four more in 46 matches for AS Roma.

The Englishman is a Chelsea academy graduate and has been with the club since 2004. Even though his colleagues like Mason Mount, Reece James have stayed at the club and enjoyed success, Abraham chose to move away and join a foreign league which was pretty unknown to him.

Speaking to The Athletic’s Alan Shearer in an exclusive interview, the Englishman revealed that he took inspiration from former players like Kevin De Bruyne, Mohamed Salah and Romelu Lukaku, who tasted huge success by moving away from the West London club.

“I’ve seen the likes of De Bruyne, Salah, and Lukaku leave Chelsea and spread their wings. They’re the best players in the world.

He even added that his interest in experiencing different cultures is a massive reason for his decision. To his credit, the Englishman has done well in the Italian top flight.

“For me, it’s about doing the same thing, and even if it’s not the Premier League, it’s about going out and learning a different culture and experiencing different things.”

Did Tammy Abraham make the right choice?

Tammy Abraham flourished under Frank Lampard during Chelsea’s transfer ban. However, after the ban was lifted, the Blues quickly signed big-money stars like Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. This certainly did not make Abraham’s task enviable at Stamford Bridge.

It was natural to think at that time that these foreign stars would become regulars in the following season. After all, the club wouldn’t be paying millions in transfer fees only to keep them on the bench. It is fair to say that players of Abraham’s calibre can find better value elsewhere.

It is debatable what would have happened with the 24-year-old if he stayed put. But, one thing was clear that moving away to a club like Roma would present him with better game time and more exposure. Hence, from his standpoint, the decision doesn’t seem wrong.

Players like Kevin De Bruyne and Mohamed Salah and Lukaku couldn’t cement their spot at Chelsea despite showing promise and were shipped out too soon. They have flourished elsewhere and currently are big names in the game.  Tammy has enough motivation to follow their path and he might attain the same success in the future.
