According to Tuttosport (h/t The Express), Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has contacted the chiefs at Inter Milan to secure a move to the Italian club at the end of the season. It is believed that the 28-year-old is willing to slash his current wages by almost 50% in order to facilitate this transfer.
The Blues broke their club record to re-sign Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku before the start of the 2021-22 campaign. Whilst the 28-year-old had a decent start to life at Stamford Bridge, fast-forward to the present and he is struggling to cement a regular position in playing XI.
The former Manchester United hitman was tearing it up with the Nerazzurri in the Serie A last season alongside Lautaro Martinez, playing a pivotal role in guiding them to their first Scudetto in 11 years. His exploits at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza earned him a lot of plaudits but all of that seems like a distant memory right now.
To say that Lukaku is having a difficult season with the Blues would be an understatement at this point. The Belgian international has managed a sub-par return of five goals and one assist in 19 Premier League games so far this campaign.
With Kai Havertz putting up some impressive performances in recent memory, the former Evertonian has slipped even further down the pecking order at Chelsea. His troubles coupled with the mammoth wages that he pockets at the moment mean that a move away from the club wouldn’t be such a bad opposition after all.
It is thought that the club may not want to let go of the Belgian international so quickly after having broken the bank to purchase his services. A loan move could thus be a great option for all the parties involved and may also help reignite the spark in the Belgian.
The former Anderlecht man has a plethora of experience in the Premier League owing to his previous stints. That being said, it seems as though the Belgian international is struggling to come to terms with Tuchel’s system which demands a great deal from his attackers.
As we head into the business end of the season, the matches will come thick and fast and the 28-year-old striker should get ample opportunities to prove his worth in a Blues jersey. Should he still fail to integrate himself, a move away from Stamford Bridge could be a decent option as the club could look to cut its losses.
If recent developments are to be believed then the Belgian striker is looking to join his former employers once again. Despite the fact that the club spent an enormous fee on him, anyone who isn’t entirely happy should make way and a move to Inter may not be the worst possible outcome considering his lack of finishing in recent fixtures.
