Chelsea star Jorginho has put the blame on VAR for his penalty miss against West Ham United in their previous fixture. He had missed the spot-kick in the dying moments of the game when the match was still 0-0 but Christian Pulisic saved his blushes to give them all three points at the end of the day.
Jorginho shockingly missed the penalty with a terrible kick from his end as Lukasz Fabianski was not forced to make an effort to stop the attempt. It was thought that the midfielder had plundered a crucial chance to give his side all three points, but Pulisic had the last laugh on the day. Now, the Italian has given his thoughts regarding the wasted opportunity.
Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports via Football Daily on Twitter (h/t Daily Mail Online), Jorginho has bizarrely put the fault on VAR for his penalty miss. The 30-year-old added that he lost focus in that high-pressure moment because of the lengthy check before the spot-kick was awarded.
“This sort of pressure, especially in games like this when you need to win and it’s last minute, and you try to isolate your mind from all that pressure even though it’s hard, and then you have the VAR so it takes longer, it’s harder to keep focus.”
It is good to see that the Premier League ace has self-reflected on the setback to improve himself next time around. One could say that he is being too harsh on himself since we already won the match, but that may not always be the case. As such, it is always good to work on an issue before it gets worse in the future.
After taking into account what the former Napoli man has conveyed, his words do make sense, as players could lose their heads when they get exposed to such high-pressure situations. Questions were raised about Jorginho’s penalty technique after the miss, but those takes are reactionary in nature.
After all, the Blues superstar has enjoyed a perfect record with us before that miss, which shows how good his technique has been for us. Hence, he should stick to his ground and not get affected by these weightless criticisms and improve mentally to deal with such situations in the future.
The only concerning area would be Jorginho’s mindset after this miss since he is also on the back of some high profile setbacks for Italy as well. That did play a part in his country’s failure to qualify for the 2022 Qatar World Cup. But we remain optimistic that these obstacles would make him stronger even further, which would, in turn, help us in the long run.
