A View From The Bridge

Chelsea ownership update: Two highly decorated sportspeople join forces with Sir Martin Broughton

Sir Lewis Hamilton and Serena Williams join the Sir Martin Broughton bid to purchase Chelsea

According to Sky News, Serena Williams and Sir Lewis Hamilton will join Sir Martin Broughton in his bid to purchase Chelsea. It is believed that both the sportspeople will commit £10 million each to help the former Liverpool and British Airways chairman in a bid to buy the Blues.

Williams and Hamilton are some of the most decorated players in their respective sports and this could help uplift the profile of the consortium led by Broughton. Earlier the Ricketts family dropped out of the race to buy Chelsea which means that groups led by Todd Boehly and Steve Pagliuca are the other two parties in the running to become the new owners at Stamford Bridge.

The inclusion of Lewis Hamilton may have come as a surprise to some of the fans, as he is understood to be a fan of London rivals Arsenal. That being said, it will be interesting to see what any of these two sportspeople will actually bring to the fore should their proposed bid be selected.

And then there were three

The remaining groups have tried their best to woo the supporters and global audience in general. Steve Pagliuca and Larry Tanenbaum recently gave an interview with Sky Sports hinting at their long-term commitment and “lifetime ownership” with respect to Chelsea football club.

Todd Boehly and members of his consortium were thought to have visited Cobham earlier this month. This could be a great step in assessing the academy and youth setup of the West London club. Whilst all three consortiums are supposedly playing their best hands it remains to be seen who becomes the next owners of our prestigious club.

The consortium led by Sir Martin Broughton is one of three groups in the race for Chelsea FC.

Hamilton has been an excellent presence in F1 in the preceding years. Anyone who is remotely associated with the sport knows the kind of influence that he possesses on the track. Williams has also been a huge inspiration, picking up 23 Grand Slam titles to date.

The grit and determination of these athletes are exactly the DNA that this club should showcase in good times and in bad. It goes without saying should the bid spearheaded by the former Reds Chairman win, it would also significantly boost their profiles.

All done and said, we need someone who can imbibe and value the principles on which the Stamford Bridge outfit is founded. Not only should our owners have the financial might to maintain our current successful streak but also maintain a good relationship with the fans.

It is now time to open up a new chapter in our glorious history. Hopefully, our new owners will be able to live up to the high standards that are set by this club both nationally as well as internationally. The addition of names like Serena Williams and Sir Lewis Hamilton show just how lucrative of an asset Chelsea is.
