According to the transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea have received a transfer boost after it was revealed that Antonio Rudiger is unlikely to join Barcelona this summer. His future at Stamford Bridge has been surrounded by uncertainty for quite a while, and this latest update would give his side a sigh of relief.
Rudiger has less than six months left in his current contract with the Blues. That means he is legally able to reach a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside England ahead of a potential move at the end of this season. His representatives have been in direct contact with Barca to discuss a transfer this summer.
However, Romano has confirmed that the Blaugrana side have not made any offer to the German centre-back. He also added that a transfer is unlikely at this stage, with Andreas Christensen currently being set to move to Camp Nou. Ronald Araujo’s expected contract extension has played a role in seemingly ruling out a deal for Rudiger.
Christensen’s likely departure had already raised concerns among the fanbase as we are in line to lose one of our key players. Fortunately, Cesar Azpiliceuta’s contract was recently renewed for another year, which does give us some leeway going into the summer transfer window.
Losing out on Rudiger as well would have been a major blow, but fortunately, it seems that we still could renew his deal in the future. His agents’ meeting with the Catalans did cause us some worries, but this latest development calmed down all those fears.
Despite this update, we are unable to do anything at this moment since the UK Government does not allow us to engage in contract talks with the 29-year-old. Hence, the club officials must find some kind of a solution soon before we are put at risk by more teams entering the fray.
We cannot afford to lose Rudiger in any case, especially when Christensen will leave the club at the end of this term. We would obviously need to replace the latter since Malang Sarr may not be ready to play consistently at the top level. Rudiger’s departure would add to the issues, so we must try our best and prevent that possibility.
Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva do not have many years left in their playing careers, which means that we need Rudiger to lead us forward when our other options are still young for now. We remain confident that the club can tie down the fast expiring contract star to a new deal and put an end to this uncertainty.
