According to The Athletic (Subscription Required), Borussia Monchengladbach are ready to facilitate a potential move for Marcus Thuram in the summer transfer window.
And according to The Sun, Chelsea are among the clubs who have been monitoring Thuram’s situation for quite a while, which means that this latest update would be a boost for their interest.
Thuram will enter the final year of his current contract with Monchengladbach at the end of this season. As such, they are looking to part ways with him this summer to not lose him for free after the next term. They are even willing to finalise a move for a cut-price deal to help with their case.
Gladbach are willing to sell the Frenchman for a fee between £10million and £15million, which is a bargain price for someone of his quality. The Blues would be looking to take advantage, especially considering how they wanted to sign him last summer. A move could not materialise because of his then agents, but the forward has changed representatives since then.
The 24-year-old has endured an injury-ridden season so far, which has seen him not even play for 1000 minutes in Bundesliga. Despite that, he still has three goals alongside an assist to his name, which is still a far cry from his splendid form from the last campaign.
Perhaps, it was for the best, as the Monchengladbach ace’s contract situation, form and recent injuries combined could probably have played a part in his current valuation. That gives us an opportunity to prise away a talented forward who is flexible enough to play across all the positions in the attack.
However, the same opportunity has resulted in competition for the Bundesliga attacker’s services as well. Our bitter rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have also been keeping tabs on him for a while, and they will be vying to secure his signature in the summer transfer window.
Our attack has arguably looked to be at their best when the front three is mobile and flexible enough to do what Thomas Tuchel demands from the frontline. Perhaps that could explain why Kai Havertz has been successful while Romelu Lukaku has struggled to get going so far.
Even Timo Werner has finally been going on a good run of form in the past few weeks. If that is the case, Thuram would be a perfect fit for us, and with his new agents, we would not run into the issue that we ran into last summer. However, the Gunners and Spurs would not give us a free run in any case, which makes up for an interesting couple of months up ahead.
