Transfer News: Oliver Kahn claims Bayern Munich cannot sign Chelsea target and Borussia Dortmund star, Erling Haaland

Speaking in an interview Sport1 via Bulinews (h/t Football.London), Bayern Munich CEO Oliver Kahn admitted that they do not have the financial means to sign Chelsea target and Borussia Dortmund star, Erling Haaland.

Haaland has quickly become one of the most sought-after players in Europe after a trailblazing spell at the German club. If there were doubts about him replicating his RB Salzburg form at a major European club, then it is fair to say he has answered those questions pretty well.

The Norwegian international has 82 goals in 85 games for Die Schwarzgelben, an impressive scoring form that he has replicated on the international stage as well- scoring 15 times in 17 outings. He is truly one of Marco Rose’s best players at Signal Iduna Park right now.

The Daily Star claims that Manchester City are prepared to offer Haaland wages of close to £500,000-a-week. That is a figure hard to match for most clubs as it is, with the 21-year-old striker also having a release clause of £63million that can be activated this summer.

Bayern admit defeat

These numbers are truly frightening. While one could argue that such would be the price to pay for arguably one of the world’s best players who is just 21 years old, Kahn believes that Bayern do not hold the financial might to get such a deal across the line.

“We wouldn’t be doing our job properly if we didn’t look at a young striker like him. He’s an excellent forward, and a highly interesting player for the future. But the financial dimensions are beyond our imagination.”

Chelsea have been linked with a move for Haaland, but that raises the question if the Blues have the means to meet such numbers. That is anyone’s guess right now, but the club is expected to have a new owner in the coming weeks.

The club’s transfer strategy can perhaps take a better shape once we know who owns Chelsea Football Club, but even then, splashing the cash on Haaland this summer after already paying £97.5million as recently as last year would be admitting that the club got it wrong with the Belgian striker.

And that is without considering the fact that the Blues are apparently paying the former Manchester United striker around £325,000-a-week in wages. It remains to be seen if Bayern’s apparent exit from the race to sign Haaland offers a boost to Chelsea and if they can afford to have a player such as the ex-Molde striker on their books.
