According to The Sun, Antonio Rudiger is set to earn huge wages at Real Madrid this summer which eclipses the latest contract offer from Chelsea. He will leave Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, having failed to reach an agreement because of the existing restrictions on the club.
Rudiger has less than six months left in his current contract with the Blues, and he has apparently ‘agreed’ a four-year deal with Los Blancos. The English side was ready to make him their highest-paid defender in history with a wage package of more than £200,000-a-week.
However, the sanctions prevent Thomas Tuchel’s side from engaging in contract talks with the German, leading to this situation. He is set to join the Madrid club on a four-year deal that, when wages and signing-on fee are combined, would earn him around £300,000-a-week in wages.
Losing the 29-year-old would be a massive blow indeed, considering how he is arguably one of our best players right now. His imposing presence and dominating influence at the back would certainly be missed moving forward, and so, the West London side must prepare for what lies ahead for them.
It is unfortunate how the sanctions imposed on us have adversely impacted our sporting project as we are in line to lose one of our best performers under Tuchel. What’s more, the transfer to Los Galacticos could be announced as soon as this week, so we may not even have a chance to keep Rudiger after all.
However, we cannot dwell on this blow for too long as plans must be put into motion even if the limitations pose problems for us. After all, replacing a man of Rudiger’s talents would not be easy considering how crucial the Premier League ace is to our backline.
The London-based club would now be smart to look for apt replacements that can mimic Rudiger’s defensive stability while also being an aerial presence to fear on both sides of the pitch. Rudiger, at 29, was certainly in the prime years of his career and it is a shame he is choosing a move to Santiago Bernabeu over spending more seasons under the manager who really put him on the map since his move to Stamford Bridge.
Let’s hope that the club will be ready to solve the crisis that will unravel after this campaign. Andreas Christensen is also apparently closing in on a move to Barcelona and with Thiago Silva’s age, there is a lot to worry about for the ex-PSG boss at the back.
Trevoh Chalobah and Malang Sarr are two young options, but the latter has largely failed to impress at Chelsea. Fans would certainly want new faces given those at the club right now would certainly find it hard to replace a man of Rudiger’s calibre.
