According to La Gazzetta via Simon Phillips (h/t Football London), Romelu Lukaku is keen on rejoining Inter Milan in the summer and is even willing to take a pay cut to enable his return.
Lukaku joined Chelsea, a club he left in 2013 from Inter back in the summer. However, his time with the Blues has not gone according to plan with the Belgian striker struggling to break into the starting 11 and establish himself in Tuchel’s side recently.
The 28-year-old forward has scored 11 goals in 31 matches for the London-based outfit and while they are not the worst returns possible, a lot more was expected from the prolific Belgian.
Injuries and Covid have not helped Lukaku’s cause, inhibiting his progress and denying the opportunity for him to get a consistent run in the team.
The Blues find themselves in a precarious position going into the summer, with a potential ownership change on the cards. Chelsea may be forced to sell a few players due to their situation and Lukaku could be one of the heads to fall with a possible return to Giuseppe Meazza touted.
Lukaku will be willing to take a pay cut if he were to move back to the Nerazzurri. That is certainly a bold claim but does align to some extent with the interview he gave to Sky Italia earlier this season, making his love for Inter public at the expense of his current club.
Lukaku’s return to Chelsea was a transfer that carried huge expectations in the summer, with the move expected to be a success amongst fans. After all, we paid a handsome sum for a player who was on the back of firing his side to a historic Scudetto win.
The Belgian seemed to have unfinished business at Stamford Bridge, and was coming to Chelsea on the back of a sensational season under Antonio Conte. It was written in the stars.
However, the former Manchester United striker often appears like a misfit in Tuchel’s system, looking isolated and not able to get involved in the game as much as he would like to be. While he still scores the occasional goal now and then, he rarely looks convincing in a Blue shirt.
Lukaku may still turn it around at Chelsea and go on to be a success and we would be wise to hold on to him for a while rather than sell him for a cut-price fee. That would be a huge financial loss for us and it’s better if we play the waiting game with the Belgian striker.
