According to Calciomercato (h/t The Sun), Inter Milan are interested in Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku with a loan deal being the most likely option at the moment.
The 28-year-old had a decent start to life after making the record £98 million switch from the Nerazzurri to the Stamford Bridge outfit. That being said, the Belgian has since struggled to justify that price tag and has only managed a paltry five goals in 19 Premier League appearances for the Blues so far this season.
To say that he has struggled would be an understatement here. Lukaku was tearing apart the Serie A with his ruthless performances but all of that seems like ancient history now. The Belgian striker even confessed his love for Inter hinting that he would love to return to the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza one day.
This return could now take place sooner than anticipated if the latest developments have any merit to them. Not only did we pay a huge sum for his services, but also made him our highest earner at the moment with a lucrative £325,000-a-week wage packet.
Whilst the club may do well to cut its losses and ship the player away considering his difficulties, a loan move could be a great way to share the burden of his wages and also give the 28-year-old a chance to find his feet back again. Should the club green-light such a solution, the defending Serie A winners could be a great destination for the Belgian international.
With Kai Havertz dishing out some clinical performances upfront Romelu Lukaku has already gone down the pecking order despite only making the switch to Stamford Bridge at the beginning of the season. Even though the former Manchester United hitman played a crucial role in our FIFA Club World Cup campaign he has been unable to showcase that same form in the UEFA Champions League as well as the Premier League.
In a Premier League match against Crystal Palace earlier in the season, Lukaku only managed seven touches which was a record for the lowest number of touches that an outfield player has ever made since the inception of stats. While it may not be fair to judge a player based on a single match, that game at Selhurst Park was an apt reflection of the tough time that he has had at Stamford Bridge.
With all this in mind, a loan move to his former employers could be a great way for Lukaku to find his feet again. This seems to be a win-win situation for the clubs involved as well as the player. That being said, the Blues will have a tough schedule as we approach the business end of the season.
This could provide the Belgian with a lot of opportunities to make his mark before the end of the campaign. Should he be able to do that our fan base may start taking a liking towards him but until that time, a loan move for Romelu Lukaku at Inter Milan could seem like a great option. The Blues could even let go of the player permanently should a lucrative offer be there on the table.
