According to the Spanish newspaper Sport (h/t The Sun), Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is set to complete a move to Barcelona by Thursday ahead of the summer transfer window. Uncertainty has surrounded his future at Stamford Bridge for some time and it would appear that we will soon have clarity on his future.
Christensen has less than six months left in his current deal with the Blues prompting him to engage in pre-contract agreement negotiations with Barca. He has already rejected an offer from the English club and talks over an extension at Stamford Bridge had broken down. That paved the way for the Spanish side to try their hand at landing him.
Supposedly, the Dane completed the first phase of his medical last week and was set to undergo the second one yesterday. The updates from the latest tests are unknown, but it is expected that his agent will complete an agreement with the Catalans by this Thursday.
It seems that the 25-year-old is edging closer and closer to an exit with each passing day, considering the updates we have received over the past few weeks. There is obviously no smoke without fire and it remains to be seen what the truth is.
The Blaugrana club have already tabled a five-year contract to the Premier League ace, which will see him earn around £95,000-a-week in wages. Apparently, Xavi Hernandez’s side had won the race ahead of Bayern Munich following an improved proposal last week.
Some unknown Premier League sides were also in the fray as they tried to secure the Blues defender’s services but to no avail. The Danish international had turned down those offers due to his respect for the West London club. It seems that we may have to prepare for life after him as there are no signs of a renewal taking place.
Thomas Tuchel could be forced to rebuild his defence if the Chelsea centre-back does complete an agreement soon enough. What makes matters worse is how two of our other defenders, Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger, are also in the same boat regarding their respective contracts.
It remains to be seen if the management can make a final push to tie Christensen down on a new deal since a formal agreement is yet to be reached. After all, they must do whatever they can to keep him with us, considering how we could also lose Rudiger and Azpilicueta. Let’s wait and see how this situation develops in the next two days to get an idea about what is to come.
