Transfer News: Chelsea could lose out on Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina due to sanctions
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, recent UK sanctions on Chelsea have halted the talks between the Blues and Chicago Fire regarding the transfer of Gabriel Slonina.
Despite being very young, Gabriel Slonina has shown remarkable goalkeeping abilities during his spell at Chicago Fire. Set to be 18 in the coming May, the youngster has the potential to reach heights if appropriately groomed.
It is believed that Chelsea reached the advanced talks with Chicago Fire, where they negotiated a €6m- €7m signing fee for the American and agreed to loan him to the MLS team until 2023. However, the talks broke down after the UK government imposed sanctions on the club and its owner due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Chelsea already have a world-class keeper in Edouard Mendy, who is making it difficult for anyone else to compete for the first choice shot-stopper spot. However, during his unavailability and injury, the Blues might require a quality backup to secure the castle.
Kepa Arrizabalaga had excelled in the role of a backup keeper when Mendy was away due to the AFCON tournament. But, the Spaniard’s incredible qualities and consistency suggest that he might have become too good for warming the bench. In such a scenario, it is highly likely that he would waste his peak years in the background rather than shifting to a new club.
If he leaves soon, Chelsea might require a quality alternative that is hard to get at this market. But a youngster like Gabriel Slonina, who possesses hunger, could help us tackle the problem.
Chelsea have one of the best youth structures in the country, which has produced some generational talents over the years. The high-end coaches and facilities could help the Americans develop the required qualities.
