According to The Sun, Chelsea will rival Manchester City to secure the services of Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell ahead of the summer transfer window. He has been on the rise since 2020 when he made his debut for the senior team at the club level.
Mitchell has quickly earned a name for himself for his renowned ability to dominate in one on one defensive duels. That has seen him earn second place in the list of the most number of tackles made by a player in the Premier League this season. Gareth Southgate was left impressed by the defender and has now called him up to the national team squad for this month’s friendlies.
Man City are searching the market for a left-back and have identified Mitchell as a potential option. The Blues are monitoring the 22-year-old at this moment, but they would need to be wary of others as well. Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are keeping tabs on his situation as well to make their case in the future.
The Brent born defender joined the Palace youth system after leaving Brentford back in 2016. His current club saved him from a roadblock after the Bees were forced to close down their academy due to financial turmoil. The Eagles recognised the qualities that he possessed at a young age and decided to give him a chance which eventually led to the current situation.
The Englishman quickly rose through the ranks since then and eventually became a starter after Patrick van Aanholt left Patrick Vieira’s side. The former has not slowed down since then and is one of the highly-rated left-backs in the English top-flight at this moment.
The Palace ace has made 33 appearances across all competitions this campaign, assisting twice during that period. His call-up to the England national team is no surprise, considering how he has performed at Selhurst Park. He would undoubtedly be a great prospect to add to our team, especially when we could require a left-wingback.
Ben Chilwell is out for the remainder of this season, and he is expected to be back in contention from the next term onwards. He has been excellent since leaving Leicester City and would still be crucial for us moving forward. However, the concern lies with Marcos Alonso, who has not been up to the required level consistently.
Alonso has done well at times, but there have also been several cases where he has disappointed with his displays. We could use a replacement for him, especially as he is not getting any younger and Mitchell could be a solid alternative.
For a move to happen, Thomas Tuchel’s side must convince the UK Government to lift the restrictions imposed on the club, which prevents them from engaging in transfer dealings. Let’s hope that Chelsea can find a solution soon enough and land the promising Englishman.
