Transfer News: Chelsea resign to losing Andreas Christensen next summer
According to Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Chelsea have accepted that they would be losing the services of Andreas Christensen in the summer transfer window. His future at Stamford Bridge has been surrounded by uncertainty for quite a while, and this news could potentially hint at an exit after this term.
Christensen is in line to become a free agent at the end of the 2021-22 season. The Blues were desperate to tie him down on a new deal since he can sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs at this moment. They have now “given up” in their attempt to reach an agreement and have started to plan for life beyond the Dane.
This update would come as a massive blow to Thomas Tuchel’s side since their rock-solid defence would take a major hit as a result of the defender’s potential departure. The 25-year-old is already believed to be on the radar of clubs like Bayern Munich and Barcelona as they look to prise him away on a free transfer next summer.
Christensen to leave Chelsea?
If Christensen is all set to depart this summer, we would be wise to look for replacements as soon as possible. After all, our defence has been a major part of our success under Thomas Tuchel and losing a key component could prove to be detrimental for us in the future.
Nevertheless, there is still time until the summer window opens. Crazier things have happened in football and fans should not completely believe that the ex-Borussia Monchengladbach ace is going to leave Chelsea until we actually see the club make a statement about it.
Until then, there is still time for things to change. However, it is certainly something to worry the fans that he hasn’t yet penned an extension here at the Bridge.
Things would not be easy for us at all, with Bayern Munich and Barca vying to secure the Premier League star’s signature at the end of this season. But if we cannot agree to terms with the central defender, Marina Granovskaia must prepare for a worst-case scenario that awaits us after this term.
The situation is made worse by the centre-back crisis that could unravel due to the contract situation surrounding Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger. Both of them will see their current deals expire in the summer transfer window, and losing them alongside Christensen could give us a major headache ahead of the next campaign.
