A View From The Bridge

Transfer News: Borussia Dortmund interested in £53million Chelsea forward

Transfer News: Borussia Dortmund are interested in Chelsea forward Timo Werner

According to 90min (h/t Football.London), Borussia Dortmund are seemingly interested in Chelsea attacker Timo Werner. The German club has also recognized Anthony Martial as a prospective target before the start of next season.

The 26-year-old has largely struggled to make his mark at Stamford Bridge since his arrival. His performances have blown hot and cold throughout his time at Chelsea and his on-field output has left the fans asking for more on several occasions. Werner has only bagged seven goals and clocked four assists in 28 matches across all competitions for the Blues this campaign.

The Bundesliga club have been known to revitalise players and develop young prospective talent at the same time. They have become a transitory place for top products such as Robert Lewandowski, Jadon Sancho with their new crop of players like Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham being touted for big things in the future.

The West Londoners have struggled to open up opposing defences on several instances but Kai Havertz has provided Thomas Tuchel a dependable outlet up top in recent memory. This along with the 26-year-old German international’s lack of clinical finishing has seen him go down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Could Werner make way next season?

Timo Werner earns a lucrative £270,000-a-week with Chelsea in his current deal. This seems like an extravagant amount considering the fact that he has delivered very little on the field. Should BVB be genuinely interested in getting the player to Signal Iduna Park, his current wages could be a great barrier.

The German attacker has immense experience in the German top-flight having played a huge chunk of his career with VfB Stuttgart and RB Leipzig. This could also help him acclimatise better should such an opportunity arise before the start of next season.

The Blues will head into the business end of the season and still have a lot to play for. The German manager would be looking to suitably rotate his squad and this could provide Werner with a plethora of chances before the end of the campaign.

In view of his recent performances, the club could try and cut its losses and a move could be the best outcome for both parties should a suitable offer be made. It would be interesting what course of action our new owners could choose but only time will tell whether or not Timo Werner will be at Stamford Bridge next season.
