According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Daily Star), Barcelona could be considering a shock move for Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku.
Whilst the Catalan giants have been on the hunt for Erling Haaland they have now openly admitted that they are behind Manchester City in the race for the rising star. They have done a good job in rebuilding the squad by acquiring young and exciting talent like Ferran Torres and Adama Traore (on loan) from the Premier League.
They could now be setting their sight on another Premier League player. With the uncertainty surrounding the Blues at the moment, Barca could look to make a move for the Belgian international. The report suggests that Mohamed Salah and Robert Lewandowski are the second and third choice options in the striker department respectively after Haaland.
Lukaku is thought to be the fourth choice option in this list. It could be comparatively easier to land the former Manchester United striker in comparison to the other strikers mentioned in the list if one is to take their current performances into account.
The Belgian international made the colossal £97.5 million move to Chelsea. Not only did the 28-year-old striker break the club transfer record but also earns the highest wages at Stamford Bridge at the moment pocketing £325,000-a-week.
In spite of this mammoth investment, Lukaku has struggled to justify his price tag. He has struggled in front of the goal in the Premier League as well as the UEFA Champions League. The former Inter Milan player quickly went from the most expensive club signing to struggling to cement a starting place in the team.
Romelu Lukaku has gotten on the scoresheet only 11 times in 32 matches across all competitions this campaign with a huge bulk of them coming in the early part of the season. Kai Havertz has proven to be a capable presence in a similar position recently, getting on the scoreboard more often than not.
Thomas Tuchel has preferred the German international over the Belgian in recent history. One cannot fault the former Borussia Dortmund manager for this decision in light of the displays by the 22-year-old. The interest from the La Liga giants could thus be welcome as it could help us recoup some of the amount spent on Lukaku as well as get his massive wages off our books.
That being said, we have now entered into the business end of the season. This could provide the 28-year-old with ample opportunities to prove his worth before the end of the campaign. The club faithful could slowly be growing frustrated with his lack of finishing and attacking prowess in front of goal.
Under such circumstances, it wouldn’t be all that bad an idea to part ways with the Belgian international. At the moment, Romelu Lukaku is way down the wishlist for Barca and we’d have to wait and see if any further developments take place.
