“Can’t help”- Tuchel reveals how Abramovich’s decision would affect Chelsea player contracts

Chelsea could be without a few key players for the FA Cup clash against Middlesbrough.

Thomas Tuchel on how ownership uncertainty will affect Chelsea contract talks

Thomas Tuchel has weighed in on whether the current ownership uncertainty will affect the contract talks with Chelsea players or not ahead of the summer transfer window. He spoke to the media in the build-up to the Premier League match against Burnley, which will take place tomorrow at Turf Moor.

Roman Abramovich has recently confirmed that he would be selling the Blues due to the consequences of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. That has caused a lot of havoc over the last few days, and the recent 3-2 win against Luton Town got smothered by talks of a change in ownership. With the current priorities lying elsewhere, the German manager was asked whether this situation would affect the club’s negotiations with players over a new deal.

Speaking in the pre-match presser (h/t Football.London), Tuchel has conveyed that no one can say for sure how this situation will impact the contract talks. That being said, he did emphasise that the English side are “strong” and stable enough to take care of themselves even under such uncertainties.

“We can’t help it. It is what it is. But maybe it has a positive effect on negotiations or maybe a negative effect. We can’t predict. Still, I think Chelsea is a strong club and will stay a strong club. Our owner has decided to sell the club but he is selling a strong and organised club at the highest level.”

Assurance from Tuchel?

Blues stars like Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta will see their current contracts expire in the summer transfer window. There have been concerns among many of the fans about the centre-back trio’s future in such a case. After all, since the focus lies elsewhere, the worries are certainly understandable under the circumstances.

We are far too big of a club to let the day to day running suffer even under a volatile environment, as the 48-year-old boss mentioned. Just like our coach, we cannot say how the talks will progress since it is largely dependent on what the potential new owners seek.

Until we attain stability behind the scenes, one could expect contract negotiations to be put off until the ownership issue is resolved one way or another. After all, it would not make sense to continue down this path if there is a change in direction in the short term.

Let’s hope that we would not be affected negatively by this uncertainty at the top and that we hold onto our best assets. It remains to be seen how these talks would turn out in the coming months with three of our key players at risk of leaving on a free. We are hopeful of a favourable outcome even under the potential new owners.
