Report: Four candidates makes Chelsea ownership shortlist

The shortlist for prospective Chelsea buyers has been whittled down to four

According to the Mirror, four potential buyers have made the shortlist of Chelsea’s sale with Boston Celtics owner Stephen Pagliuca joining the race.

The ownership saga has been going on at Stamford Bridge for quite some time now ever since long-time owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK Government and saw his assets including the club frozen. The Blues have since been operating on a special licence subject to restrictions.

Bids have been incoming to take over at Stamford Bridge and right now, it is being reported that the shortlist of potential buyers has been whittled down to four.

Boston Celtic owner Stephen Pagliuca has joined the race to buy the West London club but they face stiff competition from the consortium led by Todd Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss and Jonathan Goldstein.

The third party that have been shortlisted are a consortium led by Sir Martin Broughton and Lord Coe while the last and most controversial party that have been shortlisted are the Ricketts family who have been facing backlash from the Blues fans due to religious intolerance issues.

The Daily Mail reports that the consortiums led by Boehly and Sir Martin Broughton are the early front runners to win the race to Chelsea ownership with the Boehly bid of just south of £2.5bn said to be the highest of them all. The Express meanwhile report that the candidates must commit £1billion to future investment if they are to succeed Roman Abramovich as the club’s owners.

Nearing the finish line?

After weeks of prolonged uncertainty, the ownership saga of Chelsea seems to be coming to an end. The Blues will be relieved that their future situation could be resolved soon and a new era is about to embark on Chelsea.

It remains to be seen who the new owners at Chelsea are and what their ideologies could be but the people who are coming into office will have big shoes to fill in.

Abramovich’s 19-year-reign at the helm of Chelsea is one of the most successful periods ever in world football in a period when the Blues have won all the trophies possible.

More Chelsea News

If the new owners come in with an ideology similar to Abramovich’s, then the transition period will be smooth for the Blues. If not, they will have to adapt. That is a story for a different day though.
