According to 90Min (h/t Football.London), a number of potential new Chelsea owners want Antonio Rudiger to stay at Stamford Bridge after this summer transfer window. He has arguably been his side’s best central defender since Thomas Tuchel has taken over the wheel at Stamford Bridge.
Rudiger has less than six months left in his current contract with the Blues. He could legally reach a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs at this moment ahead of next summer. He was seemingly looking likely to leave the club after this season before the UK Government’s sanction on Roman Abramovich.
Following the station, the English side cannot engage in contract talks until the Government revise the ban sometime soon. As such, the German defender is increasingly likely to depart next summer. That being said, the prospective new buyers have contacted his camp to convey that they value him highly, and the centre-back is in their plans should they purchase the club.
We cannot afford to lose the 29-year-old in any case, considering how crucial he is to our defensive setup. If seeing him leave wasn’t bad enough as it is, failure to renew his current deal means we will see him walk away for nothing in transfer fees.
We are hopeful that the club’s sale can be finalised as soon as possible to get us out of this rut. That would help us to start contract negotiations with the Blues ace and possibly extend his deal in the process. After all, we now know that a number of prospective buyers are apparently keen on keeping him with us moving forward.
What makes matters worse is how Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are also in line to depart next summer on free transfers. We certainly cannot lose all three of our central defenders in an instant after this campaign. That would really destroy a lot of the good work Tuchel has done with our backline in the past year or so.
We have a very sturdy defence and much of it is down to the impact from Rudiger. Not to mention, our success in terms of silverware is also partly because of the strong defensive line headed by the German international, which calls for the desperate need to renew his contract.
It remains to be seen how this situation would pan out in the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window. We are hopeful that the UK Government would help to get us out of the current plight so that our long term interest would not be hampered by this sanction.
