Talking to Sportskeeda as quoted by Football London, Paul Merson believes that Chelsea will sell Timo Werner in the summer transfer window following the UK Government’s decision to sanction long-time club owner Roman Abramovich.
Timo Werner signed for the Blues from RB Leipzig in 2020 and his time at Stamford Bridge has not gone according to plan. The German striker has struggled to get going at Chelsea, finding it hard to score goals and making a significant impact on a regular basis.
With just 7 goals in 26 matches across all competitions this season, it’s safe to say that Werner is not setting Stamford Bridge alight. Tuchel has given him numerous opportunities as a substitute to prove his worth and it just does not seem to be working right now.
Merson feels that Chelsea may be ready to cut their losses with the German international come the end of summer, especially considering the predicament they find themselves in.
“Whoever buys Chelsea at this point will probably just lose money. They’ll have to start selling players – if they can get their money back for Timo Werner, they’ll probably sell him too.”
Having joined Chelsea back in 2020 for a fee of €53m, it’s quite evident that things have not worked out for the 26-year old German striker.
Huge things were expected of Werner who came to Stamford Bridge on the back of a 34-goal season in Germany but ever since his move to London, his goal output has diminished. While the German striker has the talent to succeed at the highest level, Chelsea does not seem to be the place for it.
Things will become clear in the future when there is surety over who our next owner could be. Once that transition is complete, other things can fall in place.
Merson has only made a prediction, and he doesn’t seem to be fully wrong. Common sense would point towards Chelsea cashing in on their prized assets if there ever is a desperate need for money.
We have a world-class setup at Cobham that can provide us with top quality youngsters, as it has done in the recent past.
But it remains to be seen if such a situation arises where the Blues are pressured into selling their first-team players. Until then, it’s all just speculation.
