Speaking on Soccer Saturday as quoted by Football.London, Arsenal icon Paul Merson has urged Manchester United to make a decisive move for Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel.
Long-time owner Roman Abramovich saw his assets, including Chelsea, frozen and was placed on the sanctions list by the UK Government. This saw the Blues being imposed with a lot of restrictions, including restrictions on buying, selling, and renewing contracts of players.
This has led to speculation that Chelsea may not be able to hold on to their star names, and one of the biggest names being circulated as a possible exit is that of the manager himself, Thomas Tuchel.
The Red Devils are in the market for a manager for next season to take over from interim boss Ralf Ragnick and his compatriot’s name is one of the few being touted as a potential replacement. Tuchel and Rangnick earlier worked together at Ulm and Stuttgart.
Merson is now of the opinion that Premier League rivals Manchester United must take advantage of Chelsea’s situation and make a prompt decisive move for the German manager, convincing him to swap Stamford Bridge for Old Trafford.
“I think he is world, world class. If I was Man United now I’d be tapping him up straight away.”
Tuchel joined the Blues midway through last season, replacing Frank Lampard at the managerial helm at Stamford Bridge. His time at Chelsea has been an undeniable success, consisting of highs such as winning the Champions League and the Club World Cup during this period.
The German manager has been vocal in his commitment towards Chelsea when questioned and has claimed that he is very happy in London. It’s not very easy to find a manager of Tuchel’s pedigree and Manchester United can certainly do worse than the ex-PSG boss.
However, at this point, despite the chaos surrounding the club, Tuchel has said or done nothing to suggest that he would want a way out of this club. He can stay here, guide this team out of the current crisis, and go down as a legend in the books of Chelsea fans.
The Blues have witnessed some scintillating football under Tuchel and despite the difficult circumstances they find themselves in, they will be hoping that the German continues to be in charge for many more years. Manchester United may have to look elsewhere for the time being.
