According to Goal (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea legend John Terry along with former women’s star Claire Rafferty is leading a consortium worth £250M and trying to acquire a 10 per cent stake in the London-based club.
It is also claimed that the bid will allow supporters, players and ex-staff to buy fan tickets of more than £100 in exchange for voting rights.
Chelsea are to close their bidding window for the ownership of the club at 9pm on Friday evening after which the offers will be shortlisted into four potential buyers.
Terry’s bid as a part of the consortium comes just before the deadline and the legend apparently cannot bid for the whole ownership of the club and has hence resorted to bidding for a 10 per cent stake.
Long-time Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been forced into selling the club following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Russian businessman saw his assets frozen by the UK Government and since then, the Blues have been operating on a special license subject to certain restrictions.
Roman Abramovich’s glittering 19-year reign at Stamford Bridge is coming to an end and it has been one of the most successful stints seen in English football, a time where we lifted every top title in sight including the UEFA Champions League in 2012 and most recently, last summer.
Chelsea are about to embark on a new era under new ownership and very soon, we could well be knowing who the new decision-makers of the Blues are.
The Blues will be hoping that they get an ambitious owner like the Russian who never thought twice about going that extra yard to make Chelsea win trophies and if the new owner comes in with similar ideologies of wanting to compete at the top, the transition period will be smooth at Stamford Bridge.
This development surrounding John Terry is sure to attract people’s eyes considering his status as a Chelsea legend and while he may not have the ability to bid for complete ownership of the club, it remains to be seen what happens to his proposal for a 10 per cent stake.
Testing time awaits the Blues but we trust them to get out of it and conquer the world again. And having a man like Terry owning some stake in the club, a player who knows the DNA of the club and who has been the foundation on which the great Chelsea team of the 21st Century has been built, could only come as good news for us.
