According to the Spanish news outlet AS (h/t The Sun), Inter Milan are laying down the foundations to sign Romelu Lukaku and the striker is already saying his goodbyes to Chelsea teammates ahead of a potential summer departure. He has endured a difficult time at Stamford Bridge so far after returning to the club at the start of this season.
The Blues had bought Lukaku from Inter at the beginning of this term for a record fee of £97.5million. However, he has not lived up to the expectations and has struggled to make an impact so far. In an infamous interview earlier this season, the striker conveyed that he is unhappy at Chelsea due to the system deployed by Thomas Tuchel.
The Belgian also expressed that he would love to return to the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium one day in the future. Perhaps that could happen this summer with the Nerazzurri preparing to facilitate a move. Supposedly, the centre-forward has already conveyed his goodbyes to his teammates ahead of a potential transfer, according to reporter Fabio Bergomi on CMIT TV via AS (h/t The Sun).
“The Belgian told a friend that he had already said goodbye to his teammates.”
It is highly advisable that such claims should be taken with a pinch of salt unless we receive confirmation from either the club or the player’s entourage themselves. After all, negative news tends to make headlines. We cannot rule out the possibility of such claims being untrue, especially when the 28-year-old was angry with similar talks regarding an exit in the past.
The Premier League ace can still turn things around by being decisive in the remainder of this campaign. Sure, there has been unrest surrounding the club after the sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich. But the ex-Manchester United striker hasn’t overtly done anything to indicate he wants to leave the Blues.
The Blues attacker has scored 12 goals and assisted twice this season from 34 appearances across all competitions. His output is not terrible, but it also does not justify the club-record fee that we paid for his signature. That being said, he should use his setbacks to push himself in order to reach his best form.
But that could be down to the difference in tactics and leagues. After all, Antonio Conte’s Inter and Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea are two different teams with different tactics playing in different countries.
However, that shouldn’t be an excuse for him to keep producing underwhelming performances. He was a troublesome presence against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final and showed why he is feared by defences all over the world. If he keeps his head down and puts in the extra yard in training, there is every chance we see him return to his goal-scoring best.
But if the former Anderlecht striker does leave us this summer for Inter, it would perhaps be one of the biggest mistakes we would have made in the transfer market. Despite signing Timo Werner in 2020, the decision to sign Lukaku was a statement that Chelsea really want to make themselves powerhouses in attack.
Since we invested a fair bit of time, money, and effort into signing Lukaku, it would be wise for us to stand by our decision and hold onto the Belgian international for a couple more seasons.
