Championship side prepare a permanent contract offer for 24-year-old Chelsea defender

Coventry City propose three-year contract offer to Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter

According to Nathan Gissing on Twitter (h/t Football.London), Coventry City have proposed a three-year contract offer to Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter to secure his signature on a permanent transfer deal. He is currently out on loan with the Championship side and has been excellent for them this season.

Clarke-Salter has less than six months left in his current deal with the Blues. As such, the Championship side wants to secure his signature on a full-time basis in the summer transfer window. It is unknown whether Thomas Tuchel’s side will offer the player an extension or not in the coming months.

The 24-year-old has not taken a firm decision just yet as his mind is fully focused on playing football at this moment. He also has received attention from other clubs in England, Germany, Belgium and Holland following his solid spell in the English second division.

Should we offer an extension?

In an ideal world, the Englishman’s departure would not have hurt as much as he is not quite there yet to regularly play in the Premier League. The lower division seems suitable to him at this point in his career, and he has done well to prove that point.

After all, the Chelsea loanee has become a kind of fan favourite at Coventry Building Society Arena. Hence, securing his signature on a free transfer would be a great piece of business for them. He has made 25 appearances for them this season and has helped them to eight clean sheets across all competitions.

However, we could decide to renew his current deal considering the centre-back crisis that awaits us after this season. We could use him in our squad on a rotational basis if we fail to fully safeguard our interests when the summer transfer window arrives.

We are at risk of losing Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger as free agents at the end of this campaign. Failure to renew even one of them could prove to be costly as we may need to spend big to find proper replacements.

Hence if more than one centre-back from the defensive trio departs next summer, the exodus could prove to be too big to handle in a single window. With Thiago Silva also nearing the end of his playing career, we are in need of reinforcements in central defence. That is especially the case considering Malang Sarr’s recent performance against Luton Town in the FA Cup.

With Trevoh Chalpobah also making a case for himself this season, the time might be rife for us to cash in on Clarke-Salter. After all, if at 24 he has failed to make it at Chelsea, he is better off seeking his fortunes elsewhere.
