26-year-old Chelsea star’s touted move to European giants in doubt amidst exit links

Chelsea striker Timo Werner unlikely to join Borussia Dortmund due to high wages

According to the German publication Sky Germany (h/t Football.London), Chelsea striker Timo Werner is unlikely to join Borussia Dortmund because of the high wages he earns right now. He has struggled to reach his best form at Stamford Bridge, leading to uncertainty surrounding his future.

The Blues signed Werner from RB Leipzig for a fee of £47.6million back in 2020. He was one of the best strikers in world football back in Germany but has failed to replicate the same form in England. His failure to perform at the top level has seen him get linked with a move elsewhere in recent times.

However, Dortmund may not be the next destination going by this latest update. The German centre-forward currently earns around £250,000-per-week in wages, which appears to be out of their budget. That being said, it remains to be seen if other parties would vie to get his services or not next summer.

Werner to depart?

The 26-year-old has played 77 matches throughout his time with us, scoring 19 goals and assists each across all competitions. The output seems decent, but the attacker could have easily bettered that if he had finished off most of the chances that came his way.

The Premier League ace seems to do everything right apart from putting the ball in the back of the net. He even gets into good positions to receive clear cut opportunities but fails to apply the finishing touch. That could indicate that he is suffering from confidence issues, but two years is more than enough time to overcome such problems.

As such, it would not be a surprise to see Thomas Tuchel’s side put the Blues forward in the transfer market. Recouping what we paid to secure his signature could be tough, but freeing up his wages and earning some transfer fees could be considered to be feasible under the current circumstances.

That being said, BVB may not be the German international’s next destination because of the issues with the wages. However, with him still being linked with a departure, we have to wait and see what lies in store regarding his future as we near the summer transfer window.

With players like Kai Havertz getting into the groove in the past few games, we could truly be seeing the end of the road for Werner after all. Whether that is the case or not would only be known in due time.
