Transfer News: Chelsea could sell talented academy duo to bolster summer funds

AC Milan are considering a move for Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

Transfer News: Chelsea could sell Armando Broja and Tino Anjorin to raise summer funds

According to Evening Standard, Chelsea could decide to sell Armando Broja and Tino Anjorin to raise their transfer budget in the summer window. The club, after all, could have to strengthen several key areas on the pitch at the end of the current campaign.

Thomas Tuchel has already been guaranteed that the board will back him by bringing in reinforcements next summer. They will look to meet those requirements by following a self-sustainable model, just as they did at the start of this term. That means they would probably depend on player sales to generate funds for their bidding.

As such, the Blues could look towards parting ways with homegrown talents like Broja and Anjorin to meet their needs. Southampton and various other clubs have already expressed their interest to finalise a transfer for the Cobham academy duo next summer.

Wise decision?

Broja is currently on loan with the Saints for the rest of this season and has been excellent for them so far. He has scored eight goals for them with one assist alongside it from 26 matches across all competitions. Being just 20, the striker has shown massive potential and could be a future star in the making.

Perhaps that could be the reason why Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side want to take the 20-year-old forward away permanently after this term. They are not the only ones interested in securing the Blues loanee’s services, as Arsenal and Tottenham are in the fray as well, according to Metro. He could be subjected to a bidding war next summer, looking at the current circumstances.

As for Anjorin, he is currently on loan at Huddersfield Town but is out injured with a broken metatarsal. The 20-year-old attacking midfielder is close to achieving full recovery, having picked up the blow when he was at Lokomotiv Moscow. He is another one of the highly-rated prospects of the academy, and Hasenhuttl’s team are in the mix for him as well.

We could receive as much as £50million for the departure of the academy duo, but one can wonder whether that would be the right decision. There have been many times in the past when we have been left to rue for selling our gems from the youth system. Tino Livramento and Tariq Lamptey are some of the recent examples, to name a few.

Raising funds by selling to meet our summer requirements is a good transfer policy, but it should not come at the cost of our future success. Maybe we could take a look at some of the underperforming first-team players for that purpose. That could be a possibility as Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic and Hakim Ziyech could be subjected to bids this summer.

Let’s hope that we learn from past mistakes and not take a similar stance on our talented prospects. Selling Tammy Abraham, Marc Guehi, and Fikayo Tomori did a whole lot of good to raise money for us last summer, but at what cost? Abraham was a potent young goal-scorer, while the latter two would have provided us with a much-needed safety net this summer with a defensive exodus on the horizon.
