According to the Telegraph (Subscription Required) [h/t Express], Chelsea players are reportedly exploring ways to get out of their contracts amidst all the uncertainty surrounding the club.
A number of Blues players have contacted their lawyers in order to explore the possibility of tearing up contracts at Stamford Bridge following the sanctions placed on Roman Abramovich by the UK Government. The Russian’s 19-year reign at the helm of Chelsea is coming to an end after calls for him to step down due to supposed links with Vladimir Putin.
The sanctions left Chelsea unable to renew player contracts, make new transfers and even sell tickets to their games at Stamford Bridge. With the future of the club unclear, many players are supposedly wanting to rip apart their contracts and move outside.
Telegraph claim that the agents of Chelsea players have contacted lawyers to figure out legal details regarding termination of contracts, salary payments and more. A legal source is quoted saying such players will need to go unpaid for a couple of months before they would have what is called a ‘clear just cause’ to terminate their contracts after a 15-day notice period.
However, if a court wishes to favour a player, he or she could leave the club without serving the notice period considering the unusual circumstances surrounding the club. The Blues players are apparently worried about the financial state of the club and may be forced to take drastic steps to save their careers.
To an extent, their concern is understandable. Having been paid handsome weekly wages, they are perhaps accustomed to a certain lifestyle by now. Also, a professional footballer usually retires into their late 30s and would want to earn as much as they can before that. It’s only natural.
But the Blues already have a lot of issues going on at Stamford Bridge and the last thing they will want is for their star players to go on the offensive and demand to leave.
Football has taken backstage at Stamford Bridge but Tuchel and his men are still competing for the Champions League and FA Cup and the squad has to be united in their quest to challenge for these titles.
Whilst players will ultimately worry about their own careers, deserting the club at such dire times is not the way to go about it. The Blues are in a spot of bother caught between a rock and a hard place but they are expected to bounce back.
There is still no clear solution to the Blues’ problems and there is no evident solution yet. The Blues and the players will be hoping that a resolution can be found soon so that the noise around the club can settle down.
