Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter opens up about his future amidst Coventry City loan
In conversation with Coventry Live, Chelsea defender Jake Clarke-Salter talks about his future. The 24-year-old has been a solid presence at the back for Coventry City and the possibility of the loan move being turned into a permanent one is also thought to be on the table.
The English professional footballer has played 26 matches across all competitions for the Sky Blues this season. The left-sided centre-back has been out on several loan spells and has struggled to make any inroads into the first-team setup at Stamford Bridge.
The English defender is currently in the final few months of his contract but the Blues do possess the option of extending it for another year. At the moment it is hard to see the 24-year-old making his way into the senior squad and a move to another club could also be on the cards.
Speaking to Coventry Live, Clarke-Salter addressed the speculation regarding his future. He held the cards close to his chest and highlighted that he was only focussing on doing his best season, however, he did not rule out any option.
“No, not really. I am just fully focused on trying to play as well as I can for the team and then see what happens at the end of the season. Yes, it’s an option I would consider, but like I have said, I am just focused on playing as well as I can and staying injury-free and playing well. To be honest, I haven’t spoken to my agent too much because I am purely focused on the rest of the season and playing the best that I can to help the team,”
The 24-year-old has been part of the Blues youth system for quite a while now and the player has himself shown an eagerness to become a Premier League player one day. The West Londoners already have a large roster of stars in their ranks and it could be difficult to cement a place in the first team under such circumstances.
That being said, there has been a lot of uncertainty looming around the defensive department at Stamford Bridge. The likes of Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are being heavily linked to Barcelona and could depart the club in the summer.
Antonio Rudiger will also be out of contract with the club at the end of the season and is yet to pen a new deal with the Blues. All of this combined with the fact that Roman Abramovich has decided to end his association with the club has left Chelsea in a precarious position.
There is still no confirmation about the new owners and how they will go about things in the post-Abramovich era. Under such circumstances, the German manager could be tempted to bring Clarke-Salter back to the London-based club to improve their squad depth in central defence.

Whilst it is a possibility, it seems more likely that the club would go out and make a splash in the coming window to purchase another sturdy defender who will go into the Chelsea starting lineup. Having added strength in depth will certainly ease some of the nerves around Stamford Bridge.
The 24-year-old has asserted that he is solely focused on his game and that is the most important thing for any budding professional footballer of his age. Everything at this point would be conjecture and only time can tell what lies ahead for the English defender.
