Speaking after the shock defeat to North Macedonia as quoted by Evening Standard, Chelsea star Jorginho revealed that he will be ‘haunted for life’ as Italy failed to make it to the FIFA World Cup for the second edition in a row. The 30-year-old missed penalties in both qualification games against Switzerland last year.
Should he have converted those opportunities, the Azzurri could have avoided the playoffs and could have been on their way to the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. This miss would haunt any professional and Jorginho believes that he will have to bear its brunt for the rest of his life.
The Italian midfielder has become an integral part of the Blues in the middle of the park along with N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic. He has been a sturdy presence and his defensive attributes have helped build a solid defensive foundation at Stamford Bridge.
Jorginho also played an important part when Italy went on to lift the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship. That being said, every top footballer has his forgettable moments on the pitch and the way he reacts to it could possibly have a huge influence on his future.
Speaking after the defeat to North Macedonia as quoted by Evening Standard, Jorginho shed light on how his missed penalties could potentially haunt him for the rest of his life.
“It hurts when I think about it because I do still think about it and it will haunt me for the rest of my life. Stepping up there twice and not being able to help your team and your country is something that I will carry with me forever, and it weighs on me.”
The characteristic of any top player is that he comes back stronger from a setback and hopefully the Italian midfielder will manage to do the same. He has shown great composure and determination in the past and helped guide the Blues to some significant trophies ever since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel.
Whilst he has become an integral part of the West London club, his agent has revealed that Jorginho has a ‘dream‘ of returning to his current and playing in Serie A in the future. This could mean that a move away from the club could be imminent and it has also been suggested that AC Milan are targeting the former SSC Napoli player.
Whether or not the player moves away from Stamford Bridge at the end of the season, the club could do well to future proof the midfield depart with Jorginho and Kante both in their 30s. The international break would have been a difficult time for the Azzurri midfielder after Italy failed to make it to the World Cup finals once again extending their absence in the competition to 12 years now.
The Blues will be hoping that the 30-year-old defensive midfielder can put all of it behind him and look to come back with a bang when he returns to Stamford Bridge. He has become an integral part of our lineup and we would be hoping that he can continue to put in those impressive performances in a Blue jersey.
