According to the Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo [Print Edition] via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are displeased with Barcelona and their pursuit to secure the signature of Cesar Azpilicueta in the summer transfer window. The situation at Stamford Bridge has become worse with each passing day to the growing uncertainty surrounding the skipper’s future.
Azpilicueta will see his current contract with the Blues expire at the end of the 2021-22 season. He can legally reach a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside England due to this particular situation. Concerns have been growing among the fanbase due to the Catalans’ vying to finalise a move to sign the Blues captain.
Thomas Tuchel’s side are “not very happy” with the La Liga club and how they have managed their dealings with the Spaniard so far. The English side are frustrated with the way Barca have carried out their pursuit since the situation with the 32-year-old is “getting complicated” by the day.
We can certainly understand Chelsea’s frustration, considering how they have to deal with a volatile situation at this moment given that Roman Abramovich is looking to sell the club, which means that our potential transfer and contract dealings are halted due to the uncertainty surrounding the contract.
Our hands are tied in such a case, which paves the way for other clubs to take advantage of the situation. Not to mention, those who have been regularly following the club would know that the Catalans have targeted the Premier League veteran for quite a while.
That also affects the harmony within the team, along with what has been mentioned above. Moreover, with players like Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger nearing the end of their respective deals, we have a lot of things on the plate to take care of right now.
Fortunately for us, there seems to be a clause in the Blues skipper’s contract that we can trigger to extend his deal by another year. We can certainly look to do just that if all these issues would overwhelm us in the coming months. That being said, the club may not stand in his way if he has made up his mind to move to Camp Nou.
With Xavi Hernandez keen to bring the Spanish international to his current club, we have to deal with pressure from their side. We must try our best and convince the captain to extend his stay and help us in such a dire time.
Only time will tell what lies in store for us as we near the end of this campaign day by day. We are hopeful that our stability in the defence will not get affected due to these contract uncertainties.
