According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea will continue wearing the ‘Three’ sponsored shirt despite the mobile service provider suspending their current deal with the Blues.
The club have continued to wear the logo despite ‘Three’ having revoked the current £40million-a-year deal with the West Londoners on the same day that the UK government hit former owner Roman Abramovich with sanctions in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Whilst the mobile network provider instructed Chelsea to remove their logo from the shirt, the request isn’t so straightforward as the current sanction doesn’t allow kit suppliers Nike to sponsor the club with any new jerseys. It is now believed that the club has come to an impasse with respect to the different solutions being put forward.
The Stamford Bridge outfit rejected the proposal of painting their shirt with White spray as too messy. The option of covering the logo with tape has also gone out of the window. A thin layer would still have the ‘Three’ logo visible and a thick layer would make it too uncomfortable for the players on the pitch.
The mobile service provider could now be resigned to the fact that they will be associated with the club. Things could change if a new owner is brought in as the sanctions would effectively be waived off and Nike could then provide the club with new shirts.
Under such circumstances, though, it would be highly likely that ‘Three’ would continue its affiliation with the defending UEFA Champions League winners. The Blues will therefore be fielding players with the same jersey for a significant amount of time to come.
This may not be a major issue considering that we could get new owners pretty soon. This should give us some respite and hopefully, the club can focus on their performance on the field rather than having to deal with such off-field worries.
The London-based club have done well to put all of the uncertainty behind them so far, clocking one victory after another. The Blues have certainly got some momentum going for them as they take on Brentford in their upcoming Premier League match but a much tougher opponent awaits them in the form of Real Madrid in their upcoming UEFA Champions League tie.
The Blues are still competing on several fronts this campaign as we head into the business end of the season. Thomas Tuchel has done a great job of marshalling his troops so far and the club faithful would be hoping that we can get our hands on some more silverware before the season gets over. It also remains to be seen what the post-Abramovich era has in store for us.
