According to The Sun, Chelsea are in line to face a potential academy crisis as six players are soon out of contract following UK Government’s sanctions on Roman Abramovich. That has put them in an uncertain situation with the possibility of a departure in the summer transfer window.
The Blues are banned from signing new players or engaging in negotiations to renew the contract of the existing players within their team. The sanctions equally affect the Cobham academy system as well, with several players at risk of leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of this season.
George McEachran, Xavier Simons, Thierno Ballo, Sam McLelland, Josh Brooking and Dion Rankine are the six academy prospects who will soon become free agents next summer. A club insider also revealed that this was a period when talks over an extension usually start, but they have no clue about what lies in store for them moving forward.
“Everyone is focussed on the players in the first team who are out of contract but the ones we feel really sorry for are the youngsters. Now is the time when the boys start talking about new contracts with the club and everyone is in the dark. They are the ones coming through and if Chelsea are not allowed to sign new contracts with them it’s a huge blow to both parties.”
Fans would want the Government to assist us in this case as losing our future prospects could be detrimental to the long-term future of the club. Anything that makes the sale of the club from Roman Abramovich’s hands easier would be a welcome step taken by them in this regard. After all, the West London club is a cultural asset, and their interests must also be protected in any case.
Thomas Tuchel’s side and the Premier League itself are in the dark about what their options are regarding this subject. However, we are hopeful that all parties can find a solution soon before the summer transfer window. After all, we need time to engage in contract talks and reach common ground, so it would be best if the ban is lifted at the earliest.
Our academy has been one of the backbones of our success in recent times under Tuchel and losing such key players could be detrimental to our future success. The likes of Reece James and Mason Mount, for example, play a crucial part in the first-team setup.
Moreover, future stars like Conor Gallagher and Billy Gilmour could possibly be on the same boat from the next campaign onwards as they have made a case to get more first-team minutes for us on their respective loan spells.
Similarly, we need the generation following those two to keep developing with us to maintain our rise to the top. Hence, a solution must be reached as soon as possible because if we cannot renew our player’s contracts or sign players this summer, then our academy is something we will have to rely upon for the near future. Whether that will happen, though, remains to be seen.
