Transfer News: Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku ready to take a wage cut and return to Inter Milan
According to the Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport (h/t The Sun), Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku is willing to take a wage cut to facilitate a return to Inter Milan after a torrid start to his second spell at Stamford Bridge. He was recently dropped by Thomas Tuchel for the match against LOSC Lille as his side beat the French club by a 2-0 scoreline without the help of his services.
Supposedly, Lukaku is eager to reunite with the Nerazzurri after leaving them last summer. The Blues paid £97.5million in transfer fees to finalise a transfer, but the Belgian has failed to justify that amount so far. His humongous £325,000-a-week salary package does not make the situation any better either.
However, the Serie A champions are not entertained by the prospect of a return, even with the Belgian being ready to take a salary cut. They are currently in a financial crisis, which is the reason why they signed Edin Dzeko from AS Roma as a replacement on a free transfer.
Food for thought?
Back in December, the 28-year-old revealed in a controversial interview with Sky Italia that he wants to return to the Giuseppe Meazza one day. The forward had added that he wanted to play with the Italian club once again when he can still play at a “good enough level”.
That certainly goes in line with the current update, but one could question the timing of this piece of news. After all, it would only attract unwanted attention to the Blues ace, which does not help him in any case at the moment. That seems to be true after all, considering the response from his camp.
According to Metro, the former Manchester United man’s camp shut down these claims and are displeased with the timing of the rumours. Their frustrations are understandable since the centre-forward is fighting to return to the starting lineup for the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool on Sunday.

Whatever the case it may be, it will be interesting to see if Tuchel decides to snub the Belgian international once again in the next match. After all, the attack looked more fluid with Kai Havertz playing as the lone striker, further throwing Lukaku’s spot in the first XI into question.
It remains to be seen if Lukaku can turn around his luck to have a future with us or not. Let’s hope that he would not be another addition to the “striker curse” that has plagued us for quite a long time.
