According to FC Inter News (h/t Chronicle Live), Newcastle United have made an offer to Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen. The Magpies are currently hovering just above the relegation zone as they look to ensure survival this term.
The Danish defender’s current contract with the club expires at the end of the season. That being said, Tottenham Hotspur are also linked with his services considering the kind of uncertainty that has been looming around his long-term future at the club.
The Blues could have a possible defensive exodus on their hands with Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, and Christensen all on deals that expire at the end of this season. They are yet to put pen to paper on a new deal and the possibility of them leaving the Bridge seems more likely with each passing day.
The trio has become a key part of the defensive set-up at Stamford Bridge ever since the arrival of Thomas Tuchel at the club. Whilst the Spanish international has mainly featured as a deputy to the injured Reece James, Rudiger and Christensen still seem to be in the prime of their careers and could still have a lot to offer to the West Londoners.
Losing any of them, that too on a free transfer, could be a major blow for the club. The Magpies have seen an injection of cash into the club since the Saudi takeover, evident in the January window when they went out and signed players such as Chris Wood, Keiran Trippier, Dan Burn, and Bruno Guimarães.
The Tyneside-based club could now venture into the market again to solidify its position as a rising club in the Premier League. Christensen could be the ideal signing for Newcastle and they are thought to be offering a more lucrative deal as compared to the current £83,000-a-week that he pockets at Chelsea.
Thomas Tuchel has built his footballing ideology at Chelsea based on a solid defensive foundation. The former Borussia Dortmund manager has propelled the club in the right direction leading them to the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup as well as UEFA Champions League.
Christensen has been a key figure in their defensive department and at 25, could still possibly have some of his best footballing years ahead of him. With the departure of their important defensive players now looking imminent, the West Londoners would now be wise to consider dipping into the market in the summer to shore up their defence.
Only time can tell whether or not the 25-year-old German defender stays at Stamford Bridge beyond the season, but the signs do not look ominous. Hopefully, the player can put up more pivotal performances and help the club attain more silverware should he leave the club at the end of this campaign.
