According to the Mirror, Chelsea are interested in making a move for in-form Brighton and Hove Albion star, Adam Webster in the upcoming summer transfer window to compensate for potential departures.
Adam Webster moved to Brighton from Bristol City in 2019 and is now coming into his own as a top-flight star. Even though he took some time to settle in, the Englishman has developed into an essential player for Graham Potter’s team. He continues to impress and has played a big role in the Seagulls’ excellent campaign.
Chelsea’s three central defenders – Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta still haven’t signed contract extensions and could be on their way out in the summer. Replacing three key players altogether will be a big ask even for the Blues.
The Blues have identified Webster as a quality alternative for the defence should the worst come to pass at the end of the season. Marina Granovskaia and co are looking to lure the centre back in the coming summer transfer window in order to ‘cover any or all departures.’
Newcastle United have also taken a keen interest in signing the Brighton star lately. The Magpies are in the process of creating a competitive side after the Saudi takeover and it could gather pace should they escape relegation this season. Considering the enormous financial power that they pose, they could have the upper hand if it comes to a bidding war.
Even though the Seagulls wouldn’t want to lose one of their quality defenders, considering the increasing interest from top Premier League teams, how long they can keep hold of Webster is a big question.
Defensive additions appear to be on the cards as Chelsea are also targeting Real Madrid centre-back Eder Militao as an alternative. Given the defensive reshape that could be on the cards, it makes sense that the club is keeping tabs on multiple targets.
Adam Webster is far from a world-class player but he has shown excellent aptitude as a top-flight defender. He was also rewarded with an English call up and has all the signs of being a late bloomer. Chelsea could very well be landing themselves a dependable player should the deal get completed.
Chelsea are levels above Brighton and can offer Webster better opportunities. At 27, the defender is in his prime and there is no time better than now to seek greener pastures. It makes sense for the Bleus to see the deal through to add some much-needed depth to their potentially new-look defensive core in the summer.
