According to Italian news outlet Calciomercato via Sport Witness (h/t Football.London), Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen has held talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a transfer next summer. He is in line to depart Stamford Bridge at the end of this season if there are no changes in the current situation.
Christensen will leave the Blues on a free transfer after this campaign if an extension is not signed in the coming months. That has prompted attention from elsewhere, with Spurs having held a meeting with his representatives to discuss a move. Moreover, Antonio Conte has also added him to his wishlist of potential additions for next term.
Bayern Munchen are another team to have done the same as they look to take advantage of the 25-year-old defender’s uncertain future in West London. That being said, he “continues to give priority” to extend his current deal with Thomas Tuchel’s side. However, his agents have held discussions with other interested parties over the last few hours to keep their options open ahead of next summer.
The prospect of losing the Dane alone would give us a major headache due to the potential defensive crisis that could unravel at the end of this season. Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger are also in line to become free agents in the summer, which throws a light on the potentially dire situation that awaits us at the end of this campaign.
Fabrizio Romano has recently claimed that while Christensen will not entertain offers from PL clubs, a move to a foreign team such as Bayern or Barca remains a possibility.
To make matters worse, Barca are keeping tabs on Azpilicueta as well ahead of the summer transfer window. With time running out until this season comes to a half, we must get a hold of this situation to prevent a crisis in the future.
Marina Granovskaia would be wise to tie down Christensen to a new deal at the earliest and put an end to this uncertainty as soon as possible. He is of a strong age profile and along with Trevoh Chalobah, could be the future face of our backline.
Let’s hope that the board realises the importance of an extension and will put this matter to bed soon. As for the interest from Tottenham, it would be a surprise seeing the Dane take that step- if that ever happens. The Blues are clearly in a stronger position domestically and in Europe as compared to the Lilywhites.
Christensen has already won the UEFA Champions League with us and was a part of the team that won the UEFA Super Cup as well as the FIFA Club World Cup. It’s not like he would leave us because of our lack of trophies, so it remains to be seen what exactly unfolds in this space in the coming months.
