Transfer News: Chelsea on alert as Robert Lewandowski could leave Bayern Munich
According to the transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter (h/t The Sun), Chelsea are on high alert as Robert Lewandowski could leave Bayern Munich in the future. He has been in terrific form this season as well, following up from the impressive campaign he had last term.
Lewandowski is tied down at Allianz Arena until 2023, but his future is up in the air ahead of the summer transfer window. Romano claims that the forward’s mind is fully set on the second half of this season and wants to extend his stay with a new contract. However, talks over a renewal have not begun between his agent and Bayern Munchen, leading to the current situation.
“Robert Lewandowski’s future situation is absolutely open. He’s focused on second part of the season with Bayern – but his current contract expires in 2023 and he wants a new deal to stay. There are still no talks between Bayern and his agent – Lewandowski’s waiting.”
The Blues have been linked with a move for the Polish international in the past, and they have now been made aware of this update. They are not the only ones in the mix, as Real Madrid are also in the fray alongside them. Bayern could end up selling the striker this summer if they look to get a fee for him amidst the expiring contract.
Chelsea to sign Lewandowski?
The 33-year-old has been immense this season, having scored 39 goals alongside three assists from 33 games across all competitions. Signing the striker would be a great prospect despite his age, as he has reached new heights late in his playing career.
That being said, it is unsure whether we would formally register our interest in signing the Bundesliga superstar. We are not known for finalising a transfer for players past their thirties. Moreover, the club’s transfer policy for our own players in a similar age group is to offer a one year deal, indicating the complications involved in a potential move.
Moreover, the centre-back crisis that could await us at the end of the season forces us to focus our attention on the backline. Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta have less than six months left in their current deal which means that our priority should be the defence next summer.

However, if we could renew their deals in the coming months, the Bavarian centre-forward could be considered as a target. After all, our striker options have failed to reach their expectations and having a “killer” like Lewandowski could be of great help moving forward.
That could be a possible scenario considering how we are forced to rue the missed chances in the recent loss to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final. Perhaps, having Lewandowski in the frontline could have made the difference to help win us the trophy. However, there are long ways before we can even say that there is a chance of a transfer. Let’s keep a close eye on the situation and see how it develops in the months ahead.
