Thomas Tuchel has provided his insight on Thiago Silva and how he has fared so far at Chelsea since joining them in difficult circumstances. The centre-back has cemented a spot in the starting lineup and has become an integral part of our team in the past year or so.
Silva had left Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer to join the Blues back in 2020. Things were not always so rosy for him as he took a little time to adjust to the PL and had fitness issues to overcome. But the veteran Brazilian defender made himself at home pretty quick and is now a very important part of our squad.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference (h/t Football.London), Tuchel has showered praises on the Brazilian for making such a drastic decision during the latter stages of his playing career. The boss expressed that the defender has been an example for the rest of his teammates in the way he has carried himself both on and off the pitch.
“Thiago Silva was very brave to make the decision to join the Premier League at his age, with his status at Paris Saint-Germain and to completely change his life. He’s been fantastic since he arrived; it’s the same story now, it’s a pleasure to be his coach because he sets an example every day, he’s very humble and professional and he’s an exceptional player. He’s the same person that he was, and I feel he was very brave to change his life towards the end of his career, that’s very impressive.”
The 37-year-old has not put a foot wrong recently and has been a regular under the German boss. He continues to be ever-present in our starting lineup despite being on the wrong end of the thirties. And at his age, he has shown no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
The former PSG defender has become a fan favourite in a short period, and his wife Isabele da Silva is also loved by the Blues fanbase given how vocal she is in support of her husband’s new club. It is safe to say that all parties have benefited from the centre-back’s decision to join us despite the risks involved.
Things could have gone the wrong way looking at the challenges the Brazil international had to overcome. After all, it isn’t easy for a player of his age to join the PL for the first time so late in their career and perform so well.
The fact that he has renewed his current deal until the 2022-23 season shows just how much trust Tuchel has placed in the ex-AC Milan defender.
Should the Blues ace continue to perform at a similar level, we could have a chance to achieve more success with him in the near future. Let’s hope to see that outcome moving forward, and Sunday’s clash against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final could be one such opportunity.
