Chelsea will not pay big bonuses to stars despite raking in prize money from FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup success

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea need not pay their players any bonuses for helping the club win the FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup this season.

The campaign began on a good note for Thomas Tuchel‘s men, winning the Super Cup on penalties against last season’s Europa League winners Villarreal. They added another trophy to the cabinet this month in the form of the Club World Cup after beating, Copa Libertadores champions Palmeiras in extra-time courtesy of a late Kai Havertz penalty.

Despite earning over £7m in prize money from winning both competitions, the Blues will avoid handing out these bonuses to the players as their stars did not negotiate any additional financial rewards with club officials at the start of the season.

Chelsea players will not receive any bonuses for winning the Club World Cup.

Chelsea are still in the hunt to add more trophies before the end of the season, with the FA Cup, Champions League, and Carabao Cup all for the taking. The Stamford Bridge side are due to play the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool later this month.

Bonus payment structure

Generally, clubs settle on a bonus schedule with their squads ahead of each season. This is seen as a way to incentivise the players to perform well at tournaments and leagues. At Chelsea, their stars are entitled to bonuses in the event they win the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, or League Cup.

However, since the Chelsea players did not agree on a bonus agreement for winning the Club World Cup or Super Cup this season, they will miss out on these added payments. The club had racked up £3.6m in prize money for the FIFA Club World Cup victory, and £3.7m for winning the UEFA Super Cup.

Chelsea were awarded £3.7m for winning the UEFA Super Cup earlier this season.

The news about missing out on a major financial windfall will hopefully not deter players from giving their all for the club in the future. The prize money is by no means small, but that sum divided between all of our first-team players would have certainly made it underwhelming anyway.

Despite not getting any additional payments for their success at the Club World Cup or Super Cup, the players showed no indication of underperforming at these tournaments. The club has dedicated professional stars in their ranks, and winning trophies is part of their DNA.

More Chelsea News

A hunger for winning trophies seems to be instilled in the players by Tuchel, with the German’s winning mentality and elite tactics helping the Chelsea stars achieve their potential. Since the manager came in last season, the club has been on a winning streak, winning the Champions League, Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.

There is still more to be won this season, and the manager will hope his players continue giving it their all for other trophies. There may be added pressure in the Champions League this season as the defending champions of Europe, but we can rely on our players and staff to perform to their best ability to retain the title.
