“Why not?”- Defender ready for Chelsea contract extension amidst interest from other clubs

Marcos Alonso asks Chelsea for a new contract as he confirms interest from other clubs

Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso revealed that he is ready to sign a new contract after confirming interest from other clubs in his services. He is in line to feature in the match against Palmeiras tomorrow in the final of the Club World Cup. The Spaniard would be looking to add the trophy to his collection, having not won it before.

Alonso was mostly a second choice option for Thomas Tuchel due to the presence of Ben Chilwell. However, the long term injury to Chilwell has given the former a lifeline to make his case to the coach.

Speaking in an open interview (h/t Football.London), Alonso revealed that he was subjected to several interests in the past, but he never entertained those proposals. He further conveyed his delight to play under the Blues shirt and fight for titles at Stamford Bridge.

“I have always had interest from other clubs but to be honest it was never my intention to leave. I always had that interest from other clubs but I am happy to be here to achieve these kinds of trophies.”

The 31-year-old also mentioned that he is open to renewing his current deal as he is happy at Stamford Bridge. Alonso is happy with his time at the Bridge and does not appear to be in any hurry to see it come to an end.

Why not? For me, I still have another year-and-a-half on my contract. I am very happy here so why not?”

Time for renewal?

It is good to know that the Blues ace stayed loyal to the club despite receiving offers to move elsewhere. That is especially emphasised when one considers how he had some tough moments to overcome during his time with us. However, an extension may not be a priority as his contract would only expire after next season.

After all, we have some urgent matters to solve in the centre-back position which needs to be focused on with immediate effect. We did recall Kenedy recently, but he still has a long way to go before stamping a foot in the squad. As such, we may eventually have to offer a new deal to the Spanish international.

At the same time, the Premier League fullback must raise his level as his performances have been inconsistent of late. We cannot reward a player who is underperforming with an extension, and if he does not improve moving forward, we may be forced to bring in new options. It is up to Alonso now to prove that he deserves a new contract and extend his stay with us. Whether that will be the case remains to be seen.
