As per the Evening Standard, multiple Chelsea stars stand a chance of winning individual awards at the prestigious London Football Awards as the nominees for various categories were revealed. The Blues, along with West Ham United, lead the way for the Premier League Player of the Year gong, with the clubs having several players nominated for the honour.
Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup last year, and are in contention to win the Carabao Cup and FIFA Club World Cup later this month. The players have been outstanding in the past year and would be deserving of the accolades that could potentially come their way.
The 2021-22 London Football Awards are supported by the Willow charity, which was founded by former Arsenal keeper Bob Wilson and his wife, Megs. The ceremony will take place at the Camden Roundhouse on March 3.
The prestigious Premier League Player of the Year 2021-22 will see Chelsea trio Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva, and Jorginho battle it out to win the title. All three players have been in excellent form in the past year, with Jorginho coming off the back of also being voted into the FIFA FIFPRO Men’s World 11 earlier in the season after helping lead Italy to the Euro 2020 title.
Blues manager Thomas Tuchel is also a nominee for the Manager of the Year award, after taking over the club mid-season last year and leading them to European glory within a few short months of his arrival. He could very well strengthen his chances of winning the accolade should he lead the Blues to Carabao Cup glory against Liverpool.
Rounding up the other nominees for Chelsea are club number 1 Edouard Mendy for Goalkeeper of the Year, and Blues loanee Conor Gallagher for Young Player of the Year. The latter has been in terrific form for Crystal Palace this season, and the youngster would be fully deserving of the award if he is to win it.
The players of the defending European champions will be heavy favourites to win most of the awards they find themselves nominated for, after capping off an excellent end to the 2020/21 season. The season began poorly and after a string of bad results, saw manager Frank Lampard sacked, ushering in the Tuchel era.
Blues fans had a lot to celebrate last year, as the players gave it their all to fight back from a difficult position in the season and finish strongly under the new manager. There can be no complaints from anyone if Blues’ stars manage to sweep the awards.
They continue their excellent form this season as well, facing Liverpool in the final of the Carabao Cup and are heavy favourites to win the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi. Winning these competitions will help keep Tuchel’s excellent run at the Bridge going.
Their only competition for the awards in March comes in the form of West Ham players, who themselves had a great end to the season last year claiming a European spot in the process. The Hammers are having a productive season in the Europa League this season, and could very well steal a few awards for themselves.
